Glasgow Tigers 56 v 34 Berwick Bandits

The 2019 season got off to a winning start for the Tigers as they easily saw off a disappointing Berwick side .
Most of the pre match talk was whether the lack of matches for the home side would be a handicap they would struggle to overcome.
In the early exchanges it certainly looked that way as the visitors continually out gated the home side. However that just mean’t we saw some thrilling races!
Craig Cook went from third to first in heat 1, Kyle Bickley was all over Coty Garcia in heat 2 and Rasmus Jensen also went from third to first in heat 3.
Both Tigers gated in heat 4 but Bickley couldn’t hold off Busk Jakobsen but it did give Tigers their first lead, 13-11.
Berwick drew level in heat 5 after both Bandits passed a Tiger for a 4-2.
It was the closest they would get!

Tigers took a 5-1 in heat 6, were unlucky to lose a 4-2 in heat 7 after Claus Vissing fell on the last bend chasing Etheridge and then took another 5-1 in heat 8 with Bickley just holding off Kevin Doolan to go 6 up.
Heat 9 was a classic. Paul Starke gated and won, whilst behind him Busk Jakobsen took Rasmus Jensen wide on the first bend allowing T/S Summers into third. Jensen then got both Bandits going into the second lap only for Jakobsen to storm past him again on the third lap . Jensen then made his move stick on the last lap to take the paid win.

Tigers then turned the screw with a two 5-1s and a 4-2 to lead 49-29 after heat 13.
Starke and Etheridge had a good battle in heat 14, with the home man taking the win on the last bend. Unfortunately Etheridge hit the fence on the second bend after the race ended and had to take a trip in the ambulance.

Tigers rounded the evening off with a last heat 4-2, with Cook taking his maximum.

As opening nights go this was as good as you’ll get, with a home win, good crowd and some superb racing . Craig Cook didn’t always gate but never looked like being beaten. New boys Jensen and Bickley showed up well, thrilling the crowd with some great passing, while James Sarjeant and Claus Vissing were unbeaten in 3 of their 4 races. Luke Chessell will need some time to get back up to speed though.
For the visitors, most of them had one good race but Garcia’s expected high score at reserve didn’t materialize, while Aaron Summer’s recent good form didn’t carry into this one.

It’s onto Berwick tomorrow for the return match whilst Craig Cook has his testimonial next Saturday.
